PHASE ONE - Friday
First I must talk about the costumes. Friday morning was spent finishing up sewing costume pieces since I vowed that this would be a no-cost Halloween for costumes. I succeeded! Not a penny was spent, which may be more impressive when you see what we ended up with! Well, you might not be impressed, but I was...
Gavin was Diego, complete with bright orange rescue pack and vest (which was one of my old jackets cut apart and pieced back together as a kid vest). Here's a picture.
I thought it was pretty cool. If you're not familiar with Diego, he is a sweet little cartoon guy who goes on animal rescues. Gavin became hooked when he was in his spica cast - they had all of the seasons on Netflix streaming. Apparently some people don't know about Diego - more on that topic later!
Jaynee was an adorable little baby clown. For her outfit, we already had the top with daisy petals around the neckline that we inherited from another family a while ago. We partnered that with some makeshift baby legs created from my old rainbow toe socks and a beanie crocheted from crazy red yarn complete with homemade clip. Yes, I had all of this in the house. Starting to feel like a packrat!So, with the kids all dressed up we headed downtown for the Trick or Treating at the local businesses. Talk about CRAZINESS! Luckily my mom came with me to help maneuver the stroller and keep me company. She was a really good sport considering all we put her through! Oh yes, and this was when we got SEVERAL comments such as "Look at that cute Harry Potter!" Apparently these people don't know who Diego is and they assume that kids with glasses can only be one thing for Halloween! Anyway, after a much needed pop we accompanied Grandma to the library and traded in our Halloween books for Thanksgiving books (we keep seasonal books in a basket in our living room...I jumped the gun on the Halloween books so they were due two days before Halloween.) That was our Friday.
PHASE TWO - Saturday
Saturday was a busy but very fun day! We went to a church activity held at the orchard of one of our ward members - an apple squeeze and barbeque/chili cook-off. This is such a fun activity that I remember fondly from my childhood, so it was really special to share it with our kids! Gavin got right in there with the washing (and eating) of the apples...
He also got to go fishing at their stocked pond. The fish were a little shy at this particular activity. He actually caught a fish the last time there was an activity at this property.
Gavin and my cousin's daughter, Aimee, checking out the caught fish. This activity is held on a different date each year, but this year the available date happened to be the day before Halloween so at the end of the day there was a trunk or treat.
Gavin was mesmerized by the vampire at one of the trunks and had to keep going back.
Jaynee got herself a treat, also. Boy, did that wrapper taste good!

PHASE THREE - Sunday
After church we came home and rested. Then it was off to my parents' house for our weekly dinner. Because it was Halloween, though, my mom wanted us to dress up since she knew we weren't going trick-or-treating (adults included!) Here are the pictures of our costumed group.

I include this horribly unflattering picture so you can see our full costumes. In keeping with the no-cost costumes, we pulled out Guatemalan clothing that Jared brought back from his mission. The reason I look so, um, THICK is because the skirt is actually like 5 yards of fabric that is cinched at the waist. (Jared says that with enough wearing they lose the "poofiness." ) So there it is, our Halloween. Sorry for the marathon post but it really was a marathon holiday!
